Energy Site and Powerwall Data Issues
This FAQ addresses common questions about Energy Site data, including Powerwall status, null responses in the console, and grid connection monitoring.
Why does the Live Status button show 'null' when I click it?
Answer:
A null response when clicking the Live Status button in the Teslemetry console is typically a temporary server-side issue that will either resolve itself, or can be resolved by logging in again.
Solution:
- Go to teslemetry.com/login
- Complete the login process (this refreshes your authentication)
- Return to the console and try the Live Status button again
This issue does not necessarily indicate a problem with your Powerwall or Tesla account, but may be a temporarily issue with Tesla's service.
What does island_status mean for my Powerwall?
Answer:
The island_status field indicates whether your Powerwall is connected to the electrical grid or operating independently (islanded).
Values and their meanings:
Value | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Powerwall is connected to the grid and operating normally |
| Powerwall has disconnected from the grid (islanded mode) |
| You manually took the system off-grid |
| System disconnected due to grid instability or outage |
| Status cannot be determined (exclude this in automations) |
Using island_status in Home Assistant automations:
If you want to trigger automations when you lose grid connection:
- Trigger when
island_statusis NOT "on_grid" - Important: Exclude the "unavailable" state from your triggers
Do Energy sites require explicit permission during Tesla authorization?
Answer:
Yes. When you first connect your Tesla account to Teslemetry, you must explicitly grant permission for energy products.
Required scopes:
- Energy Product Information: Allows querying data from Tesla energy products
- Energy Product Commands: Allows sending commands to Tesla energy products
If you did not enable these scopes during initial setup, your energy sites will not appear in Teslemetry.
To add energy permissions:
- Visit auth.tesla.com to modify your Teslemetry permissions
- Enable the Energy Product Information and Energy Product Commands scopes
- Log in again at teslemetry.com/login
Can unused energy sites cause Home Assistant integration errors?
Answer:
Yes. If you have energy sites associated with your Tesla account that you do not actively use or that return incomplete data, they can cause errors in the Home Assistant integration.
How to resolve:
- Check your Teslemetry console to see all energy sites linked to your account
- If you have sites you do not use, consider excluding them from your subscription
