# Home Assistant Integration Setup and Issues

This FAQ covers common questions and troubleshooting steps for the Teslemetry integration in Home Assistant.

## Official Documentation

* **Home Assistant Teslemetry Integration**: [home-assistant.io/integrations/teslemetry](https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/teslemetry)
* **Teslemetry Home Assistant Docs**: [teslemetry.com/docs/home-assistant/introduction](https://teslemetry.com/docs/home-assistant/introduction)

## Prerequisites

Before setting up the Teslemetry integration, ensure you have:

1. **Active Teslemetry subscription** - Sign up at [teslemetry.com](https://teslemetry.com)
2. **Virtual key installed** (for 2021+ vehicles) - Required for Fleet Telemetry and certain commands. Install via [tesla.com/_ak/teslemetry.com](https://tesla.com/_ak/teslemetry.com)
3. **A current version of Home Assistant** - The integration sets up via OAuth: it opens the Teslemetry consent flow in your browser and manages its own credentials from then on (no manual access token is needed)
4. **Tesla account scopes granted** - Ensure you have granted the necessary permissions when logging in at [teslemetry.com/login](https://teslemetry.com/login)

Setup does **not** require your vehicle to be awake - the integration validates through your account, and only individual live entity values can be unavailable while a vehicle sleeps.

## Common Setup Issues

### Q: Why is my Home Assistant integration showing "Failed setup, will retry" error?

**A:** This error can occur for several reasons. Follow these troubleshooting steps:

1. **Restart Home Assistant** - This resolves many temporary issues
2. **Check your Home Assistant version** - Outdated versions are a common cause. Update to the latest version of Home Assistant
3. **Verify your Teslemetry subscription is active** - Check at [teslemetry.com/console](https://teslemetry.com/console)
4. **Reauthenticate if needed** - Use Home Assistant's built-in Reauthenticate flow (Settings > Devices & Services > Teslemetry), which reopens the OAuth consent flow

**Common error messages and causes:**

| Error Message | Cause | Solution |
| ---- |
| "Account has insufficient command credits" | No command credits available | Purchase command credits or wait for your monthly quota reset |
| "Account or server is rate limited" | Too many API requests | Wait a few minutes and try again |
| "The user has reset their password..." | Tesla account authentication expired | Use HA's Reauthenticate flow for the Teslemetry integration |
| "Received invalid data" | Server-side issue or outdated HA | Update Home Assistant to latest version |
| "An error occurred while processing the request" | General server error | Update Home Assistant; this often resolves the issue |

### Q: My Teslemetry entities are showing as "Unavailable" - how do I fix it?

**A:** Entities showing "Unavailable" typically occurs when:

1. **The vehicle is asleep** - Some sensor values are only available when the vehicle is awake. Wait for the vehicle to wake up naturally, or wake it using the Tesla app
2. **Integration needs time after setup** - After initial setup, the vehicle must be awake and send data for entities to populate. This can take a few hours
3. **Server outage recovery** - After Teslemetry or Tesla server outages, entities may temporarily show unavailable. This typically resolves within a few hours once the vehicle is awake
4. **Missing streaming data** - If using Fleet Telemetry (streaming), ensure telemetry is configured in your [Teslemetry console](https://teslemetry.com/console)

**To resolve:**

1. Wake your vehicle using the Tesla app
2. Wait 5-10 minutes for data to sync
3. If still unavailable, reload the integration (Settings > Devices & Services > Teslemetry > Reload)
4. As a last resort, restart Home Assistant

---

### Q: The integration says "Login required" - how do I reauthenticate?

**A:** The integration is OAuth-based and has a built-in reauthentication flow.

**Solution:**

1. Go to Settings > Devices & Services > Teslemetry in Home Assistant and select **Reauthenticate** on the integration's repair/notification prompt
2. Complete the Teslemetry OAuth consent flow in your browser
3. If no prompt appears, reload the integration and check Home Assistant's Repairs section

There is no need to remove and re-add the integration for authentication issues, and doing so unnecessarily may affect automations that use device IDs rather than entity IDs. Where possible, use entity IDs in your automations to make them more resilient to integration changes.

### Q: Why is my Home Assistant integration stuck on "initializing"?

**A:** The integration can get stuck initializing when:

1. **Network/connection issues** - Temporary connectivity problems between Home Assistant, Teslemetry, or Tesla servers
2. **Outdated Home Assistant** - Update to the latest version

**Resolution steps:**

1. Restart Home Assistant
2. Try adding the integration again

Setup does not require the vehicle to be awake - if entities remain empty after setup, that is normal until the vehicle next wakes and sends data.

---

### Q: I'm getting a "Migration Error" in Home Assistant - what should I do?

**A:** Migration errors can occur when Home Assistant or the integration updates and needs to migrate data or configuration.

**Solution:**

1. **Update Home Assistant** to the latest version
2. **Restart Home Assistant** after the update
3. If the error persists, try removing and re-adding the integration

---

## Version and Update Issues

### Q: What version of Home Assistant do I need?

**A:** The Teslemetry core integration is available by default starting in Home Assistant 2024.2, with most functionality added in version 2024.6. **Always use the latest version of Home Assistant** for the best experience and to avoid compatibility issues.

Many support issues are resolved simply by updating Home Assistant. If you cannot update, consider using the HACS beta integration.

## Troubleshooting Checklist

If you're experiencing issues with the Teslemetry integration, work through this checklist:

1. **Update Home Assistant** to the latest version
2. **Restart Home Assistant** (not just reload the integration)
3. **Check Teslemetry console** at [teslemetry.com/console](https://teslemetry.com/console) - verify subscription is active
4. **Reauthenticate** via HA's built-in Reauthenticate flow if prompted
5. **Wake your vehicle** using the Tesla app if entities are unavailable
6. **Verify virtual key** is installed for modern vehicles
7. **Check Home Assistant logs** (Settings > System > Logs) for specific error messages
8. **Enable debug logging** for more details
9. **Remove and re-add** the integration as a last resort
